LJimmy Garoppolo is out with a fractured foot, so the 49ers are starting Brock Purdy, the 262nd overall pick in the 2022 NFL Draft. Purdy entered the fray on Sunday against Miami, aiding the 49ers in defeating the Dolphins 33-17. (8-4). On San Francisco's second drive of the day, the rookie quarterback, who replaced the injured Jimmy Garoppolo, completed 25 of 37 throws for 210 yards and two touchdowns, one interception, and three sacks. The win improved the Niners' record to 8-4, moving them into third place in the NFC standings with a one-game advantage over 7-5 Seattle in the NFC West.
No quarterback picked in the last round has started a postseason game as a rookie since the draft expanded to seven rounds in 1994. Jay Walker, Gus Frerotte, Matt Cassel, Koy Detmer, Jarious Jackson, and Matt Flynn are the only seven-round quarterbacks to have made an appearance in a playoff game during this time, and none of them did it in Year 1. We obtain more postseason hits if we broaden the criteria to include undrafted quarterbacks, with Kurt Warner being the most well-known of these, along with Tony Romo and, more recently, Taylor Heinicke and John Wolford. But once more, none of them were rookies when they played in their first postseason game.
